Les SHIJIN proposent ici 8 pièces résultant d’interactions, d’abord élaborées en duo, puis complétées par les deux autres éléments, et enfin fixées ensemble dans un format rarement utilisé dans la production de jazz: le « Concept Album », conciliant l’électrique et l’acoustique, l’improvisation et l’écriture ou encore la musique contemporaine et le jazz traditionnel…

Suite à l’album sorti en 2018 et plusieurs tournées (US, Europe, Inde), SHIJIN présente son deuxième album, qui sortira fin février 2021. Pour cette nouvelle production, Laurent David construit ce disque à partir des briques élémentaires que sont les instrumentistes du quartet. Leurs interactions, créatrices d’harmonies, de rythmes et de mélodies surgissent de l’énergie du vide ! La réputation rythmique du duo Braff/Galland n’est plus à faire, la vélocité, le lyrisme et l’ouverture d’esprit de Stéphane Guillaume non plus. Il ne reste plus qu’à Laurent David de maintenir tout cela avec force et détermination. Les musiciens se réunissent d’abord en duo, écrivant en connivence une forme, un thème, une structure, tout en laissant suffisamment d’espace pour les autres musiciens, qui ont ajouté à leur guise leurs lignes instrumentales. Fort de cette matière, Laurent DAVID élabore une méthode de production, à la manière des tournages de cinéma, et réunit enfin l’ensemble du groupe afin d’enregistrer les pistes définitives. Le résultat est une savante mise en scène, incluant par exemple deux sets de batterie aux prises de son antagonistes, des flutes traitées par un synthétiseur modulaire, un piano réverbéré naturellement ou encore des pistes de basse électrique tranchantes…

Laurent DAVID, bassist, born in Paris and Based in Brooklyn, NY, is the founder of record label ALTER-NATIV, for which he produced and developed projects such as KILTER with K. Grohowski & Ed Rosenberg III (Winner of the Independent Music Award); SHIJIN alongside Jacques Schwarz-Bart, NAKED (Bass Solo) played on stage with guests: David Linx, Nguyen Le, Thomas De Pourquery; M&T@L alongside Maxime Zampieri and Thomas Puybasset; Nenad Gajin/Karim Ziad/Laurent David; THE WAY THINGS GO including musicians such as A. Hoenig, T. Campbell, I. Maalouf, G. Perret, A. Paceo, C. Bonacina, T. Arpino, Z. Ravitz... and many other albums. He also toured with Ibrahim Maalouf (Golden Disc for « Illusion » and « 10 ans de Live »), Guillaume Perret & Electric Epic (Tzadik Label), Yael Naim (New Soul: ad. for Apple company and several Golden Discs), EOL Trio (International tour), Didier Lockwood (Big Band), Jean-Michel Kajdan (2 albums).

Stéphane GALLAND was born in Belgium, received his first drum set at the age of three. He started playing jazz with his fellow pianist Eric Legnini very young. He formed later the band called AKAMOON with Fabrizio Cassol and Michel Hatzigeorgiou. The band recorded over 20 CDs and performed worldwide. This led Stéphane to record and perform with Oumou Sangare, Doudou N'diaye Rose, the South Indian master of Mridangam Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, the Turkish master of percussion Misirli Ahmet… Stéphane has been playing and recording with Joe Zawinul, Joe Lovano, Toots Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Mark Turner, Robin Eubanks and singers Ozark Henry, David Linx, Zap Mama… From January 2014, he has joined Ibrahim Maalouf for his worldwide tours and albums. In 2011, he founded his own project called “LOBI”, with Magic Malik, Tigran Hamasyan, Petar Ralchev, Misirli Ahmet & Carles Benavent. Stéphane released his second album (the mystery of) KEM in 2018.

Stéphane GUILLAUME enters the world of Jazz from the age of 17 years. At the same time he is awarded a prize of the Conservatoire de Paris in classical saxophone. His passage in François Jeanneau’s jazz class allows him to meet and play with many musicians. He celebrated his 20th anniversary on tour with the National Orchestra of Jazz in which Laurent Cugny engages him in 1994. Like a very desired sideman, he takes part in many various projects, including with Patrice Caratini, Claude Nougaro, Didier Lockwood, le « Paris Jazz Big Band », Peter Erskine, Vince Mendoza… He does not neglect his leader’s capacities by realizing five albums under his own name. In 2009, the French Academy of Jazz awards him the prestigious prize « Django Reinhardt » of best french jazz artist, and the price of best french jazz album for « Windmills Chronicles ».

Malcolm BRAFF was born on June 10, 1970 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). He started playing the piano at the age of five The trio Braff - Oester - Rohrer, with whom he recorded two albums, the Malcolm Braff Trio (with Alex Blake and Yaya Ouattara), with whom he recorded the above-mentioned album Yele, the 3IO Quartet with Patrice Moret and Pascal Portner, the BMG Post Music Trio with Francois Gallix and Francesco Miccolis, the tintet Malcolm Braff & TNT and Malcolm Braff & Ensemble Contrechamps. Furthermore, Braff works in a duo with Samuel Blaser and is a member of the Erik Truffaz & Malcolm Braff Indian Project, Andy Scherrer's Swiss South African Jazz Quintet, the bands of Lisette Spinnler and David Brito and Yarnick Barman's group Kiku et Veto. Besides music, he also develops various board games together with friends. The 2007 game Jamaica, which he co-developed with Bruno Cathala and Sébastien Pauchon, was awarded the Essener Feder 2008, was on the recommendation list for the Game of the Year 2008 and was nominated for the As d'Or - Jeu de l 'Année 2009.
